Managing Alligator Weed on Your Shoreline
Alligator weed spreads quickly and can block access to the lake if not controlled. Members are responsible for keeping their shoreline clear. Here's how to manage it safely and effectively:
Step 1: Inspect and Remove by Hand
Put on waders and manually rake or pull out alligator weed along your shoreline.
Dispose of the cuttings away from the water to prevent regrowth.
Manual removal helps reduce spread and can be used alone or combined with treatment.
Step 2: Apply Approved Treatment
Contact ILPOA to request aquatic-safe chemicals approved for use in the lake.
Follow the instructions carefully — only apply along your shoreline.
Avoid overuse, as it can affect aquatic life.
Step 3: Monitor and Maintain
Re-check your shoreline regularly throughout the summer.
Remove any new growth early before it spreads.
Reapply treatment if necessary, following the same safe-use guidelines.
Step 4: Ask for Help if Needed
If you're unsure about treatment or need help, reach out to ILPOA.
The Board can provide guidance or connect you with resources.
If alligator weed is left to die off and sink, it adds organic matter that builds up as muck, making the lake shallower and murkier over time. Removing it instead of letting it sink helps keep the lake cleaner and more usable.
